So I decided to make a map
« on: October 22, 2010, 04:54:58 PM »
Alright, so I've been considering making a map for some time now, and originally I was messing around with Hammer for Source to make one for L4D, but then I decided I didn't want to work that hard, so I'm going to attempt to make one for DoD :) Let me know what you think of my rendition of dod_lennon_b3 (for the most part it will be pretty similar, but I do plan on adding some secret things and I may or may not tell you what and/or where they are depending on what it is  :icon_lol: ) Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with how it's looking so far, been working on it for the past hour or so and I have the Axis spawn almost done. I took a screenshot so enjoy!

Oh, and it looks confusing, but Axis don't spawn first as in before the Allies, I'm just working on it first :icon_redface:

Looking forward to the rest, let me know if you have any mapping Qs

yeah, for sure, right now I'm just doing the layout and textures, but I already have a few questions in mind when I get there :)

MINOR UPDATE: Axis spawn is pretty much done. Now for my first session of "Ask Spirit" :P K, two things Spirit, how do you make the ground uneven (like making the grass have hill-like bumps and grooves here and there. I'm not quite sure how to change and work with geometry in hammer. Second thing, I have my skybox and there are no leaks to the outside space-like world :P but when I hit "check for problems" or whatever, it says there is no player start. I thought those would be considered info_player_axis and info_player_allies, but when I added those, it still says the player start is missing so I'm confused. Thanks in advance :)

I will make a terrain tutorial and post you the link to it

The "No Player Start" thing will always be there, it's more of a warning than an error, I wouldn't worry about it, but if it bugs you... it goes away when you put a info_player_start.

hmm, well i still can't test my map because whenever i hit run map and what not, it says there was at least one error, and as for the info_player_start, i dont have that as an option in my entities drop down.

make sure you have both the half-life.fgd and dod.fgd loaded in your configuration

So, I messed up by scaling the whole thing last time, and it gave me a bunch of errors so I was forced to restart with lack of a backup save (stupid me :P ) but Spirit helped me through some common questions today, and I am back where I was plus a tree :P

Thanks Spirit for all your help! :)

Hmmm hmm hmm, so I have another question for ya Spirit. How do you make a brush visible, but make it so that you're able to clip through it? Like, I have ivy hanging down from the overhand, I figured out how to get rid of the blue background, but when I jump through it, I get stuck as if it's a wall. I don't know if there's a func_whatever that it should be set to after tying it to an entity, or what. Any help? :)

I could've sworn I've tried that before, but maybe I had the render visibility set to 0 on accident  :icon_redface:

worked like a charm thanks!

Ok, so for anyone who's interested, it's coming along rather well in my opinion and instead of taking abunch of screenshots, I decided to record a demo of me running around in it a bit. Yes, I'm aware the door is WAY too thick lol. and there's some areas that I forgot to texture, but you'll get the main idea.

To play the demo, put it in your dod folder (C:\Program Files\steam\steamapps\dayofdefeat\dod) (C: is my local hard drive, yours may be different) and then simply load dod and type in console "play cor_lennon_v5" or "viewdemo cor_lennon_v5" (NOTE: "viewdemo" allows you to fastforward and rewind whereas "play" doesn't)

Bad Demo? - won't load for me

<EDIT: Look below for a video. Pictures take up too much space and make loading the thread annoying :P>

A quick note aj, for the person to be able to watch the demos you make, they have to have all the map files that you do installed. The demo works by saving the players movement, and location. When another person watches it, it just shows what happened on your installed map. It doesn't work like a video capture software, where you don't need the stuff to watch it.

Looking very good :)

Haha, yep, only thing I've ever done with it was with later version of hammer, when I only build like, the starting point, and put a bunch of shelves in a room with dead zombie bodies :P

Here's a video that should work fine. Recorded with xfire and shrunk down to a resonable size. Not great quality after shrinking but I didn't want to upload a 200 MB file :P
